Throughout the last couple of months, local daycare and preschool providers had the opportunity to participate in a free training called I am Moving, I am Learning. Through this training, they received the skills and resources to get the young children in their care up and active.
This training was offered to all local daycare and preschool providers that have been participating in the Statewide Health Improvement Program and making policy, systems and environmental changes in their own environment to make it easier for the children in their care to be active.

McLeod County Public Health is a recipient of a Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition Business Case for Breastfeeding workplace lactation grant award. The SHIP Coordinator along with the McLeod County Employee Wellness Committee and Family Health Nurses will be working to increase workplace lactation support for employed breastfeeding women and their families in a variety of settings throughout county buildings. This new endeavor will focus on creating a county-wide policy outlining organizational support for breastfeeding employees as well as share and promote this written policy with all employees. The framework of this grant will focus on offering work schedule flexibility which will allow moms to schedule breaks and work patterns to provide time to express or pump breast milk during the workday. This grant will also assist with helping McLeod County to provide employees with a designated breastfeeding room (or rooms) or an accessible, clean, private, and safe space other than a toilet stall where they can express or pump breast milk.

McLeod County has developed a booklet that highlights numerous activities, events and public spaces that providers can take advantage of with their kids at limited or no cost. “As part of our site visits, we found that childcare providers were eager to take children on field trip activities, but needed a common information source that would help them to plan,” says Kerry Ward, McLeod County SHIP Coordinator. Thanks to the booklet, providers, preschool, and families now have a listing of area resources in all nine of the county’s cities, including trail information for regional parks and activities such as open swim and special events organized by the cities.

Through SHIP, schools in Sibley County have access to a unique resource to help them grow their farm-to-school program. Casey Walters is working as a local forager, available to area schools participating in SHIP. A farm-to-school forager is someone who can help the schools find locally grown foods to serve in their school food programs. We are excited to have Casey on board with SHIP through June 30, 2011.
While Casey is with us, she is also creating a directory of local farmers interested in selling their products to schools. If you are intersted in being a part of this directory, please contact Casey at rick0152@umn.edu .
